One of the goals for this blog is to help the families in Lake Titicaca to learn about the joys of reading, especially reading to children. This is a picture of my grandson,Connor, who at four months old already LOVES his books. One of his favorites is Clifford, The Big Red Dog. We think it's Clifford's color and the contrast of his large black and white eyes that he really likes, but he already truly "Knows" about books.
Pretty lucky for the grandmother who is a librarian, right?

Stay with me as we work to give this same joy to the children and families of Amantani, Peru.

Meet Me

My name is Marilyn.  Sometimes I go by Marilyn Myrick Watson, Myrick being the name of my father and Watson the name of " ex" and three of my four children.
I have used this formal name to write and publish four books on famous Arizonans, but that is not the purpose of this blog.

The purpose of this blog is to talk about books and specifically to talk about how
we, you and I together, can get books into libraries in Lake Titicaca, Peru. Let me tell you how this dream started.

Two years ago Barbara Gowan, President of lour local chapter of Arizona Reading Association visited Lake Titicaca in Peru. The lake is the largest high altitude navigable lake in the world. As a bioligist, Barb has always wanted to see it. On this trip, she was guided by Victor Pauca, a man with a dream. His dream is to build 9 small libraries on Amantani Island in Lake Titicaca. The people on this island live at at subsistence level and possibly below that. There is no source of milk on the island and very little fruit. The people exist on potatoes and other items from their garden and anything they can get in trade with other villages.

The educational standard is quite low and the children can barely read. Victor would like to increase the level of literacy and enable the children to have the many friends one can find in books. He also is hoping to produce an honest leader, something that he fears  may be in short supply in their government. To this end, the Arizona Reading Association has sent several thousand dollars to help him get started.

I hope you and I can send another one thousand dollars to help that number of books to grow.
